Managed to get the bonnet catches sorted without pulling the grille off. I tied a piece of string to the wiring as I pulled the catch out so that I could then tie the new wiring to the end and pull it back through and the new catch was being fitted.
Clever eh?
Or at least I thought so until the connector got stuck behind the headlight and I had to remove the lamp unit to get enough clearance..

I’m sure your way worked better than my hammer idea.
However, a brick wall and 30MPH would take the whole front end off, giving you unbeatable access to the entire engine.
